Celebrity Look: Get Allison Williams’ Glowing Complexion

    Guest blogger: Jennifer Braun

The Golden Globes were over a week ago, but I’m still lusting over Girls star, Allison Williams’ glowing complexion. So I had to give my go-to Sephora gal a call to find out how to recreate this look. Not to my surprise, Naila Karkour, Sephora Colour Consultant, was just as excited about this beauty look as I was.

“The classic smoky eye and nude lip – she really couldn’t go wrong with that,” Karkour says. Read on for this beauty pro’s step-by-step guide to recreating this red carpet-ready beauty look.

Sparkle and Shine with Tarina Tarantino

Known for her modern jewellery (and probably for her bold pink hair, too), Tarina Tarantino is anything but ordinary. Her personality sparkles and so does her amazing cosmetics collection. The Tarina Tarantino line is available exclusively at Sephora. This spring, you can expect to store your matte makeup until next fall and make some room for glitz and glam.

The Floriculture Eyeshadow Palette ($49) is going to be a this spring. It has it all: shimmer, radiance and vibrant colour. The shadows are all hyper-pigmented and they have that pearly, jewel-like finish Tarina’s makeup goodies are best known for.

For the gloss lover, you won’t want to miss Sparklicity Gloss ($18). Made with gemstone powders, this hyper-shiny gloss has a crystalline effect. It also acts as a lip stain so the more you apply, the darker the shade can become. You can control how light or dark you wish for the gloss to appear. Bonus: It’s super hydrating and lasts for hours.

If you’re looking for a dewy summertime look, you’ll definitely want to try out the Tinted Pearl Glow Primer ($42). It has the characteristics of a primer with a pearl-like finish. That means you will start off your makeup routine with radiant skin. All these great products are waiting for you at Sephora.

4 Rose Extract Makeup from Yves Rocher

Next month, Yves Rocher will be launching a new line of expert products for a perfect complexion. Made with 4 rose extracts, the products are gentle and really effective at giving skin a flawless finish. The products contain musk rose oil which is rich in fatty acids so it strengthens the skin, damask rose oil to even out skin tone and rosewater which softens and soothes the skin.

My first favourite product in the new collection is the Perfect Primer ($24). I have become a primer junkie over the last year or so and I find myself unable to go without it. When you want a perfectly flawless finish that will last all day and night, primer is a must. Perfect Primer actually smells like roses so you know the extracts are there. It helps the foundation adhere to your skin better, plus it fills in imperfections so your foundation will glide on easily and leave the skin looking smooth and radiant.

After letting the base set, I apply the Replump Liquid Foundation ($29) with a makeup sponge. (A sponge is a great way to make sure you don’t waste any product.) It’s really smooth and as the name suggests, it plumps the skin to fill in fine lines and wrinkles.  One of its key ingredients is shea butter, which is quite rare for a foundation.

Shea butter is an ultra-nourishing ingredient so it keeps the skin hydrated and smooth at all times. That means your makeup won’t dry up and flake out after a few hours. I am personally a huge fan of these products and so far, I’m very happy with them and I think you will be, too.

The line also consists of a Flawless Finish Corrector, a Radiance Corrector Pen and a Highlighter and Shimmer Powder Duo. Visit an Yves Rocher store next month to test the products out for yourself.

NARS Smoothing Face Prep and Eyeshadow Base

Like with anything else, your makeup won’t look as good as it should if you don’t start off with a good base. I am really liking NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base ($29 – left) and the Skin Smoothing Face Prep ($36 – right). The products glide on smoothly and don’t leave a greasy film behind, which can sometimes be the case with bad makeup primers.

I think it’s important to make the distinction between the Eyeshadow Base and Skin Smoothing Primer. In case you didn’t already know, you need both. Don’t bother using a face primer on your eyes as it won’t really do the trick. With makeup, it’s important to use the appropriate products in order to get the best look possible. The Skin Smoothing Primer is made to even out your skin tone and help your makeup adhere to your skin better. Plus, I find it keeps your skin from getting oily throughout the day.

You don’t need to wear primer everyday but I would recommend it for specific occasions. For example, if you’re headed out after work and plan to keep your makeup on from morning until the wee night hours of the night, primer might be a good idea. You should also apply primer if you’re wearing heavy makeup for a night out or if you have excessively greasy skin. (The oil can mess up your makeup.)

But one of the best parts about primers like these ones is that they enhance your makeup so you don’t need to apply as much. The Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base really makes my eyeshadow show more and keeps it in place all day and all night.

If you haven’t already tried a primer, these are great products to start with. Once you see the long-lasting results, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without primer before!

NARS is available at Holt Renfrew, Sephora, The Bay, Murale and at www.narscosmetics.com.

The makeup primer you can’t live without

Lancôme‘s La Base Pro is my new best friend. Any good makeup artist knows that a primer is the key to long-lasting makeup. I’m embarassed to say I’ve been living without primer all my life until I stumbled upon this little gem.

La Base Pro by Lancôme is an oil-free primer that keeps my makeup from flaking or fading throughout the day. (I suggest you use an eye primer for eyeshadow for extra hold, though.) I prefer La Base Pro for keeping my foundation, concealer and blush in place all day. No touch-ups! I love that.

If you have a long work day ahead of you and plan to go out afterwards, you don’t have to bring all your supplies with you for a touch-up at the office if you’re wearing a good primer. Like anything else, you have to start with a solid base for optimal results and La Base Pro helps you achieve just that.

Do you use a primer? Which ones are your favourites?

La Base Pro retails for $44.

Gushing over MAC’s new spring collections

Every year, MAC’s limited edition collections catch my eye. This year is no exception. There are three limited edition collections coming out this season and you absolutely need to get your hands on them.

The first collection (and one of my personal faves) is the Give Me Liberty of London collection available from March to May 2010. The bohemian chic cosmetic containers bring fashion and beauty together. Aside from the pretty decoration, the cosmetics live up to the usual MAC standards: smooth, long-lasting and top quality.

The Art Supplies collection is a must-have for makeup aficionados. The collection is made up of long-wear eyeliners and lip colours. The colours are shockingly intense and I am loving them. Bright and vivid colours are almost a pre-requisite for spring makeup. You might want to check this collection out as soon as it hits MAC stores and MAC’s website. It’s only going to be available during April and May 2010.

The third srpingtime collection is called Prep For Colour and this one might as well be atop your list if you want to take advantage of the other collections. The makeup primer and Prime Skin Brightening Serum will even out your skin tone and allow your makeup to adhere to your skin longer. Take my advice, when working with intensely bright hues, you can’t afford to skip out on a primer. Plus, the serum in this collection has SPF 50. That’s the highest concentration of SPF in makeup I’ve seen so far. If you take the time to pretty yourself with makeup, you should also take the time to care for your skin and treat it right. This collection will be avilable for purchase from April 8, 2010 until May.

If you want to browse MAC’s new collections before they hit the stores, become a Facebook Fan of my page and check out the shopping gallery. It has all the retail info and large images so you can get a sneak peek before everyone else ;-)
