    NARS 2010 Holiday Makeup Collection

If for nothing else, I love the holiday season for the abundance of gorgeous makeup it brings along with it. This year, NARS has come out with an absolutely gorgeous-looking collection of products that encompass three of the season’s hottest beauty trends: neutrals, metallics and pastels.

The first item in the collection is the Sex Appeal Blush ($29). It’s a pale peach that looks best when dusted on lightly just beneath the cheekbone, in the hollow of the cheek. This technique adds depth to the face.

The limited edition nail polishes, Pokerface and Bad Influence ($21 each) will make for great stocking stuffers. Plus, they both match well with the Melusine Eyeshadow Duo ($38). This trendy duo focuses on the metallic trend with a deep purple hue and pale silver lilac shade.

The limited edition Okinawa Eyeshadow Trio ($55) mixes silver, cobalt blue and black for a seductive smoky eye, which is perfect for a New Year’s Eve party. You can also offset the lips with one of the limited edition lipsticks, Petit Monstre, a sparkling berry hue, and Little Darling, a trendy nude tone (both $30).

The metallic glosses are a personal fave of mine for the holiday season. Both rich and lustrous, Downtown and Bougainville ($28 each) are a fabulous choice for a fancy cocktail party.

And last but not least, the one item no holiday collection would be complete without: a shimmering gold eyeshadow. The limited edition Étrusque Single Eyeshadow ($26) is one item you can’t go wrong with for the holidays. Dust the shimmering shade over your lid for an extra holiday kick that’s trendy to boot!

The NARS Holiday collection is available online and at NARS counters now. Which products are you longing for this season?

Simple Smoky Eyes with Kat Von D

The oh-so-coveted smoky eye look is always a favourite. Applying it yourself? Not always such a favourable experience. A smoky eye can’t afford to be done wrong because there’s a fine line between a rockeresque gaze and looking like someone slapped you across the face with a two by four. Today, I’m going to let you in on a few tips to help you learn to apply a smoky eye the easy way.

Although my life seems to revolve around learning how to use makeup, I’m actually willing to admit I’ve had trouble perfecting the look myself. So much so that I decided it just wasn’t for me. But on a recent shopping trip to Sephora (the mother of temptation) I found Kat Von D’s True Romance Eyeshadow Palette Adora ($44) and just had to try it out.

The infamous tattoo artist is known not only for the body art she sports, but her ability to create unique and and edgy designs. Her makeup collection is no different. Though the line offers a variety of colours, the dark, rocker colours are the most captivating.

I experimented with the smoky eye and finally mastered it with this kit! The trick is to apply a variety of dark shades to create depth and the True Romance Eyeshadow Palette offers tons of great shades. I start with the sparkling dark purple and apply it only on my lower lid. Then, I added some of the darkest metallic grey to the crease and the lightest metallic grey to the brow bone. To add a seductive gaze, I dab a touch of the darkest sparkling blue shade with a stomper brush and with the same brush, I swept some more of the dark blue under my lower lash line for a thick dark line.

The look is even more intense in person that is is the photo above and it’s totally to-die-for. Although the look is entirely dark, the slight hint of colour is visible under certain lights and it really makes the eyes pop. (It was just a little too hard to catch that in a photo.) If an intense gaze suits your fancy this year, give it a whirl with Kat Von D‘s glamorous collection.

The Smoky Eye Step by Step:

In case my explanation is too hard for you to follow, here is the broken down play-by-play so you can recreate the look yourself.

    1. With a loose crease brush, apply the dark shimmering purple to lid. A loose brush will give the makeup a smoky finish. Tightly packed brushes make the shadow look messy.
    2. With a crease brush again, apply the dark metallic grey to the crease only. Glide the brush back and forth a few times until the makeup looks even.
    3. With a Q-tip or fingertip, apply the lightest shade to the brow bone to open up the eyes. Feel free to dab a dot of the same colour to the inner corner if you want to brighten it up.
    4. This is the most crucial step. With a stomper brush, apply the dark shimmering blue shadow to the outer corner of the eye. The colour should extend no further than one-third of the eyelid. Glide the stomper brush along the lower lash line and smudge with your fingertips. That’s it! Good luck!

If you still have trouble, feel free to email me personally with your Qs.

Noir Cosmetics makes smoky eyes a cinch

It’s great to know that smoky eyes are on trend for 2010 but the truth is, even it wasn’t a trend this year, I’d still be sporting the look because I love it. The seductive gaze should never go out of style if you ask me. The only problem? It’s not always a simple look to achieve.

I received some products from Noir Cosmetics that I really love, mostly because they simplify the process. As you may have guessed, this Montreal-based cosmetics line centres itself around black makeup. Think intensely chic as opposed to goth.

My two favourite products are the Smooth Blend Eyeliner ($16) and the Lash Lust Mascara ($17). Let’s start with the eyeliner. It’s a kohl liner with a soft texture so it’s not only intense but it glides on easily, too. I like to trace along both my upper and lower lash lines with this double-ended pencil. Then turn it over to use the smudge sponge on the other end. It gives my eyes a runway-worthy look in no more than two minutes. I draw and smudge a thicker line for a more intense smoky eye. It all depends on what look I’m going for.

The best part about smudging afterward is that it doesn’t matter if you don’t trace a perfect line because you’re going to smudge it all over the place anyway. That’s great for me because I always make a mess when I apply pencil liner anyway!

To complete the look, I opt for Noir’s Lash Lust Mascara. It’s a thick formula that lengthens and adds volume at the same time. (A definite must when it comes to smoky eyes.)

Oh, I forgot to mention that I first start off by applying a taupe or grey eyeshadow to my eyelids first. It makes the whole look more dramatic. You can try the Jewel Box Eye Shadow Palette ($28).

Do you have any smoky eye tips? Do tell! I’m always looking for simpler (and mainly) quicker ways to do things. FYI, you can find Noir Cosmetics online or at Jean Coutu pharmacies.
