Say Goodbye to Winter Skin Problems

Just in case you need another reason to loathe the winter (like I do), let me tell you exactly how winter damages your skin during this frigid season. Extreme cold and extreme heat indoors can cause the skin to dry out excessively. The lack of adequate sebum on the surface of the skin and in the layers beneath it can lead to cracking and flaking, which are openings for bacteria. This can lead to eczema and other skin conditions.

When your skin suffers from problems like this, you have to be so careful what you use to treat it. Many products with harsh additives can cause even more irritation and redness. You may want to consider Diane Lai’s Rejuvenate ($45) and Soothe ($34) skin care products.

Rejuvenate can be used as a daily moisturizer and it’s made for highly sensitive skin. It’s even safe enough for babies so there’s no way it can cause any irritation. My boyfriend, who happens to be a pharmacist and an extremely picky man when it comes to skin care, has been using this cream for the last couple of weeks and he loves it. He told me that the light lavender scent is just right (he can’t handle smelly products) and the cream leaves his skin feeling soft, hydrated and smooth. (He’ll probably kill me for sharing this secret…)

Then there’s Soothe, which is ideal for soothing skin irritations like red patches, eczema, sunburn, insect bites, etc. Diane Lai products are all natural and suitable for adults, children and toddlers. In fact, Diane created these products herself when her own son was a newborn. She noticed he had some rashes on his cheeks and neck and there were no products out there that didn’t contain parabens, lanolin, paraffin, mineral oil, and phthalates. So she created it!

Protect Your Hair From Dehydration and Frizz this Winter

Suffering from dry and/or frizzy hair this winter? You’re not the only one. Winter is definitely the toughest season on your locks. The extreme temperatures and windy conditions ravage hair and leave it feeling dryer and more coarse than any other time of the year. When hair lacks moisture, it not only feels rough, but it also breaks more easily and creates split ends and that annoying frizz we all loathe.

Live Clean, known for their natural plant-based products, has just come out with two new products that are sure to put an end to winter’s most common hair problems. Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioner Spray and Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Restorative Conditioning Mask ($6.99 each) are your soon-to-be new BFFs. As the name would suggest, these products are infused with argan oil which is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin E.

Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioner Spray (pictured above) is a product I’d recommend for all hair types. Spray more if you have thicker and drier hair and go for a little less if you have fine, flat hair. The product, which smells fabulous, is sure to nourish your weakened hair and repair the damage the terrible winter has caused. This product can be used on wet hair every day (although I recommend only washing your hair 3 to 4 times per week at most).

The Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Restorative Conditioning Mask is better suited to those with very damaged or extremely dry and porous hair. A mask should be used once or twice per week and its goal is to repair and regenerate damaged hair. The rich and hydrating argan oil component will leave your locks looking and feeling softer, smoother and healthier in no time.

Amazing New Body Washes from Dial

You probably think of Dial as the ordinary hand soap everyone has in their bathroom. Well this year, Dial‘s undergone a major transformation and you’ll never see it the same way again. Their new line of body washes for men and women not only smell like heaven but still have the same antibacterial qualities Dial‘s known for.

My first fave is the NutriSkin Grape Seed Oil and Lemon Grass Body Wash ($6.99). This smells absolutely divine. It has a real citrus scent and it’s totally refreshing. It’s also a very hydrating body wash so this winter, you may want to consider trying it out to help fight off nasty dry winter skin. The micro-beads inside also help to exfoliate the skin, leaving it smooth and touchably soft.

For the vanilla-lovers out there, Vanilla Honey Yogurt ($6.99) is about to make your must-have list. It smells great and its thick, rich and creamy formula means it hydrates even the driest skin. If you use this everyday, winter won’t be your skin’s worst enemy this year.

And of course, there’s something for the boys. The Hair + Body + Scalp For Men ($6.99) is a dude’s best friend. One bottle, three uses. You may want to buy this for your man if you want him to keep his hands off your expensive shampoos and conditioners. He’ll love the feel and practicality of the product and you’ll get to keep your citrus or vanilla-scented soap and shampoos all to yourself. Plus, it smells great. (No worries boys: I promise it smells 100% manly.)

Pick up the new and improved Dial body washes at your local pharmacy today. At only $6.99 a pop, it’s at least got to be worth a try.

Teint Idole Fresh Wear Makeup from Lancôme

This summer, Lancôme launched a new liquid foundation that I think is going to be a great fall/winter essential. The liquid foundation promises an 18-hour shine-free finish. I tested it out myself and was very pleased withe results. It managed to survive an entire work day without budging. Plus it contains an SPF.

In winter, many of us (myself included) forget to protect our skin with SPF and it’s so important. No matter the season, sun damage occurs ever single day. This makeup not only provides flawless coverage, but it does so while protecting the skin from harmful UV damage.

I have also noticed that products with SPF in them tend to be a little richer and slightly greasier which can make the skin look shiny by the mid-afternoon, especially if you already have oily or combination skin. But since this product is matte and offers 18-hour shine-free wear, you won’t have that problem. (Bonus: After four weeks of use, the product will make the skin appear smoother and more radiant.)

I suggest applying this silky smooth product with a makeup sponge. It glides on very easily that way. Plus, you may waste more product than you’d like with a foundation brush or your fingers. Just dab some product onto a sponge and very gently tap it all over your face in a patting motion. This will take a few minutes but it will also make sure you apply the least amount of product with the maximum amount of coverage.

Teint Idole Fresh Wear is currently available at Lancôme counters and online for $40.

Skin Care Routine: Balance Oily Skin with Dr. Hauschka

I know summer is still here but like it or not, the warmer season will soon be coming to an end and our skin will be faced with the harsh realities of fall and winter. If you have oily skin, then you know your face has accumulated lots of excess sebum throughout the ultra-humid summer we’ve had. Fall is a great time to balance your skin’s PH and control both excess sebum and severe dryness, both of which contribute to premature aging of the skin.

Dr. Hauschka is a line of products focused on helping your skin regenerate itself naturally and maximize its power of healing. We may not be able to purchase loads of luxe beauty products like these, but here a few that I think some of you may want to consider if you’re looking to prevent and control excessively oily or dry skin.

First, you may want to start with the Facial Steam Bath ($41). This product will open up your pores to allow you to unclog them and relieve them of excess sebum and dirt accumulation. Even if you wash your face everyday (as you should be!), there is always some excess that isn’t easily removed because it’s so deeply lodged into the skin’s pores. The Facial Steam Bath will liberate your skin of toxins which can create excessive oil or acne.

The Cleansing Clay Mask ($46) is a great follow-up step. With the same natural ingredients and botanicals, it will absorb excess sebum and dirt build-up so you can easily rinse it away and put your best skin forward.

Another product that may be worth while for your oily or combination skin this fall is the Normalizing Day Oil ($43). It contains apricot kernels, almond oils and St. John’s Wort (a natural healing herb). It helps control the sebum production of oil glands that have been overworked during the hot and humid summer. This will help balance the oil on your skin to prevent it from becoming too oily or from overly dehydrating (which is a nasty problem fall and winter bring along with them) throughout the season.

If you’re interested in purchasing one of these products or one of Dr. Hauschka‘s other skin care products, call 1-800-663-6226 or send an email to info@drhauschka.ca for retail information.
